Book review: "guns and hunting" by Finn Aagaard - field and stream (blog)

By David e. Petzal

Right at the top of the list of persons, I am still among us is Finn Aagaard, who left for 12 years happier hunting grounds. It was a neat guy and one of the very few of our profession which is challenging incident of Jim Carmichel that there is nothing deader writer died canon.

Finn writing is similar to that of Jack O'Connor - another exception to the rule. It contains a ton of experience, common sense, strong opinions and humour. This book, which is a compilation of his articles for The American Rifleman, is a jewel of 302 pages that covers cartridges, shotguns, scopes and hunting in general. It also contains an excellent and insightful preface by John Barsness, who must read for anyone who wants to really appreciate Finn.

Aagaard was no fan of high technology and would care for a large part of what is today be whipped by the biz of the firearm. He liked action Mauser, old and extended low-power cartridges. He did not fire at long range, since the work of a fighter, there is really that is approaching.

Finn itself governed by a strict code of ethics. He disliked the idea to draw something for fun. If you were going to eat, you could pull the trigger, but if not, not. Once we arrived on a reservoir (a term in Texas for a breeding pond) full of snapping turtles of size not seen since dinosaurs walked the Lone Star State. I chose a reptile the size of a triceratops and raises my rifle.

"Not", he said and fixed me with a filled glare of the wrath of the Earth. I did not. And I bring up the idea again once.

It has also deepened. Once, as the preparation of a seminar where he was to speak on the placement of ball, he shot an aoudad (I think), cut one side of the animal and took photographs where everything was located. Any diagrams for Mr. Aagaard.

But mostly it was a fine, clear writer who also knew how tell a story, and who knew what he was talking about, and you simply step to better than this. Hunting and firearms is $ 34.95 for safaripress.com.

Several methods for shooters to long distance - Observer-Reporter

Keep, run the sights or use Mil?

This question continues rearing its ugly head when I am in an Armory. Proponents of each method of fire appear to be also divided, with each lawyer being reached of rabies on the method they support.

I realize there has been a vast improvement in rifles and optics, and yet there is a question of the use of certain techniques of long distance shootout.

My reasoning on the subject is based on the knowledge accumulated for many years of filming, a reading and plain old a little logic.

When I was in my late 20s, I would come home from work, take a bite to eat, Eileen kiss on the cheek and take on the local alfalfa field. The poor woman, put in place with my goofy way of life.

More often than otherwise, my companion has a transplant of Kingsport, Tennessee, who loved to hunt the marmots.

I linked once a story about how we left a fourth of July picnic to spend a small amount of time for a marmot or two. We are carried away and remained until the dusk.

We were the two inhabitants of sofa for a week.

Over the years, I learned a lot more pork, hunting and shooting at long range. Either way, I have nothing against ousted a marmot at over 700 meters, if the shooter is to be honest with the distance.

It was then that we realized the difficulty of holding a very long shot. A few marmots, or else, no matter what game, struck by the first shot when the distance is greater than 500 meters. Your dirt of tasks of PAL flight and rough estimates how much more duration of effectiveness is required to reach the target.

Therein lies the dilemma. Just what blade of grass were you most when you shot? It seems easy to add only six inches more efficiency, but there are times when it is impossible.

To this difficulty, we spoke of our sites running.

This means to adapt to strike dead rise in distance from the target.

Here, we are confronted with the problem of the reliability of the internal motion of the scope. Remember, the scope should move back to the original point of view.

This may be a problem with multiple scopes, including many higher-priced models. This is what is called lag.

When this problem exists, adjustments in scope may not work until this that shaken by the recoil of the rifle.

Keep in mind that the lag can cause a miss, but it is also a problem in the return to the original zero. Yes, there are there areas that are 99% reliable when adjusted, but they cost as much as two or three 700 s Remington.

To test the adjustments of the scope, the shooter must simply hit the square. To do this, take a group and adjust the scope up to 16 clicks, or four inches. Now, take a group and move the same number right clicks and firing on another group. Down 16 clicks and draw on a group and then 16 left clicks and draw on a group. You should be good in the first group.

Don't forget that when you run the sights, the scope must be exactly square with the bore of the gun or scope adjustments will be non-linear. Instead of straight up and down, they move vertical and top and left or top and right. Some of this information may be of the opinion, it is a fact.

Approach more sensitive to the realization of a dead hold - on long range is the use of points of mil.

Mil points offer more a point of sight in the scope and this concept offer points long distance of the goal without scope adjustments.

Over the years, I have used three methods and concluded that the theory is one thing, but the real question is to know if it works in field conditions. Any method we use should be tested long before go. This requires a good bench rest and a lot of ammunition.

After a good, thorough shooting session, you will know that your scope tracks and fits properly. After having worked in a store and many combos sight, I can say that not many litters will perform properly.

If go us with our magnum $150 range and super and miss the first shot. Where I hit? About seven inches from the bottom.

The lace of Queen Anne me for the first time? Hmm.

My finder to long distance, said 600 yards. My 50-grain ball moves to 3 800 fps. I will take on the second point of mil. It can run.

n Will Orndoff of Graysville and Fred Carper Washington put together a long-range big game rifle. It will be built on a Howa action with a canon Shillen and Bekl & Carlson stock with aluminum bedding block.

Half-minute accuracy is guaranteed, and the rifle will be lined with far-reaching long-term Huskemay.

Review of the scope: the conquest of Zeiss Duralyt 1.2 X - 5 X - MySanAntonio

by David e. Petzal

At the fire of January show, Zeiss people showed me a new line called the Duralyt conquest scopes that are at the upper end of the scale of business award, built on 30 mm tubes and are supported by the Zeiss guarantee you-break-it-we-fix-it-period. There are three in the line: a 1.2 X - 5 X, 2 X - 8 X and an X - 12 X 3. The Duralyt which I ogled is a variable 1.2 X - 5 X with Illuminated Reticle new of the Zeiss, which designated the Zeiss reticle 60, illuminated. (What else you call?)

It is based on the German model 4A, but it is much finer than the classic version and I said thank you, but I don't like with the coupe red dot he guide your eye to the center of the image as the heavier crosswires. Zeiss I was sent one however and after brooding for some time, I decided to test the reticle 60.

For targets, I used the Big Five unique series printed by the press of Safari. They show the large African animals against their natural environments, and as reality, they present a challenge. Shoot one, you have everything first to choose the creature and then get the cross where it should be. Bull's - Eyes they ain't.

I have implemented the targets 25 metres and fired five shells at two different targets, each shot timed by a stopwatch. My test rifle was a Ruger Scout, which is a light rapid-handling little gun. First, I shot 5 balls with an American scope of very high-quality equipped medium viewfinder and a circle in the middle. I have used such a graticule on Cape buffalo at very short range and find the bee knees. The scope has been set at 2 X. The average time spent per shot was 1.964 seconds, and I had three fatal success.

Then I have swapped offshore for the Zeiss, also set at 2 X and received an average of 1.792 seconds per shot, and five lethal doses. Is that I am wrong about 60 RETICLE? Custer erred at Little Big Horn?

The superior performance of the Zeiss reason lies in the fact that half more of your field of vision is clear. No crosshair not mean son that you can see better. The other reason is the Zeiss Optics, which are simply prodigious - much, much brighter than even the very good American scope.

Crosslinked notwithstanding, I believe that a red dot at the intersection of the cross is the quickest to aim, and the dowry of Zeiss is a paragon of perfection. That's all you want.

The price of the real world for the Duralyt with Illuminated Reticle is just less than 1 300 $ (no light is $200 less) and as the reverse along what is now openly called a depression, it is legitimate to ask, it's the Zeiss really twice as good as a scope of $650? Twice, I know. I can tell you that it is optically in an entirely different League of any scope of $650, I used. I can also tell you that if I were to build a dangerous game rifle or a shotgun within 200 yards and prices are not applicable, the Duralyt is where I would go.

Fire new store "Heavy Metal" opens its doors to Stevens Point - Wausau Daily Herald

Jake Andreae said it buys is the first rifle, a carabine.22 of his brother when he was 8 years old.

Since then, Andreae said it has had a passion for firearms and has more than 100 of them.

Today, Andreae has decided to combine his passion with a new company, heavy metals of firearms, which opened the week 2190 Strongs Ave last. With a selection of more than 100 different rifles and several handguns guns, Andreae said he has a selection for those looking for a firearm.

"I wanted to be able to go to work and do something, that I love." I have all these guns, and I thought why not a licence and sell them? "Andreae said.

Andreae said it is only hunters and amateur shots that are appear in businesses such as his own, but also those who are seeking to possess a firearm due to the State of the hidden law report.

Wisconsin became the 49th State to allow citizens to carry secret weapons when Governor Scott Walker signed the measure in the Act in July 2011. The Act took effect 1 nov.

"I had a lady who never owned a firearm who wanted protection," said Andreae. "I walked him through the basics such as security and loading procedures, talked to its course it needed to take to get her permit and told him on a shot around the area."

Hunters and lovers of fire, at the same time, also have a wide range of weapons to choose. Andreae, said that more of the handguns, his store offers two semi-automatic weapons and shotguns. He added that it can do a custom job on the weapons, such as mount extended.

"One of our greatest points we make is that we turned each weapon in this store," said Andreae. "If we want to sell something, we want to be able to tell you about our experience with it."

Andreae said it also has an assortment of knives for sale.

"I was never really in knives, but I travel around a large number of firearms stores in the State and would see them there, so when I opened I felt that it was something that we should have," Andreae said. "" "". To be honest, we sold more of them than the firearms at this time. »

It plans to add a selection of cases with non-lethal weapons, including Cayenne Pepper.
